GERD (gastro oesophageal reflux disease) copied from Quora of 21 April 2025

Monday, April 21st, 2025

This article may be of interest to fellow sufferers of this terrible disease which I have treated successfully with Natrum Phosphate (Nat Phos) 6x (Biochemical Cell Salt) which is stocked in Homeopathic stores. I have cured hundreds, perhaps thousands of victims whose cases are listed in this Website and can be accessed by using the Search window.

This information is perhaps the last article that I post as I am well over 95 years in age and use “Joepathy” which is a term that my patients coined to describe my own method of using the standard Remedies used but in a manner that was criticised by classical Homeopaths as it did not conform to the standard rules governing this curative art which is designed in my opinion, to not CURE the suffering patient using simple and safe Remedies like Nat Phos ASAP, but are designed to prolong the agony of the patient by conforming to the rules which I discarded after satisfying myself that the Remedy I prescribed (always free of Charge) worked. I would like to mention that I am not a qualified Practioner and Homeopathy is not my profession.

I count many Professional Homeopaths as my friends and Joette Calabrese is one of them and I have copied all my case records with her and she can be contacted by anyone professionally, on Joette Calabrese.com.

Acid reflux happens when stomach acid flows back into your esophagus, which can cause discomfort like heartburn or a sour taste. While this might not directly explain the strong odor in your stool, there could be a connection through your diet, digestion, or overall gut health.

For the acid reflux, there are a few simple adjustments that can help. Avoid foods that trigger your symptoms, like spicy or fatty meals, and try to eat smaller, more frequent meals instead of large ones. It’s also a good idea to avoid lying down right after eating—give it at least a couple of hours. If you notice the symptoms at night, raising the head of your bed slightly can make a big difference.

Now, about the stool odor—this could happen for a variety of reasons, like your diet, gut bacteria imbalance, or even malabsorption. Let’s start with your diet. High-protein or fatty foods, or foods rich in sulfur, can sometimes cause a stronger smell. Keeping a food diary for a week or two could help identify if any particular foods are contributing.

Adding probiotics, either through yogurt or supplements, might help balance your gut bacteria, and prebiotics like bananas or oats can support the good bacteria. Staying hydrated and eating fiber-rich foods can also improve digestion overall.

Finally, I must share my personal experience here with you; and that is a bit of fennel seeds after every major meal will also improve your gut health.

What are natural remedies for acid reflux?
I want to share an experience my wife went through while she had acid reflux problem for several months. We visited a hospital which was the famous for gastroentrology. The rumour is that the lead doctor is trying to appear in Guinness book of records for having performed maximum number of esophageal surgery. Without even spending not more than a minute attending to my wife’s problem, he informed us his assistant will explain us next steps. His assistant doctor immediately suggested next Thursday for a surgery at another branch of the same hospital. Funny, the assistant doctor had more gas reflex problem than anyone could have. He could not even speak continuously for 2 minutes with gasping out air through mouth.

Luckily, before being admitted to surgery, we came to know about another gastroentrologist, who is a MD. She is also a professor and teaches Gastroenterology subject in a leading medical college in the city. The hospital doctor who is striving for Guinness records and appears on TV is a MS i.e. Gastroenterology surgeon.

After examining the patient thoroughly, she (MD doctor) suggested methods of how to eat food slowly and drink water etc., and then prescribed Prazole tables for 3 days and she told my wife even the tablets are optional and she is prescribing for our psychological comfort only.

Then she told my wife to do something for the next 3 days to cure acid reflux, which cost nothing and no side effect. She asked my wife to keep one piece of clove on the side of the mouth throughout the day for 3 days and said it would help salivate. And, to our surprise, the problem was gone in 3 days without medicine and without surgery. Keeping a single clove inside the mouth did the trick. We were very thankful to the MD doctor. Subsequently she became our preferred doctor as a general physician and she even referred us to her other colleagues for specialist appointments. She is a professor in a medical college.

The meeting with a Cardiologist professor she referred was another interesting experience after having went through the earlier hospital’s cardiologist. I couldn’t avoid the hospital due to my employer’s health insurance coverage.

Well, I would suggest going to a doctor, but the doc would probably not let you near because of your smell, you’d likely scare all his patients away. Maybe you should stop eating your own poop. Or perhaps learn how to use a toilet and flush.

What is the best long-term treatment for GERD?
During a really stressful period in my life I had really worrisome trouble with gastric reflux. I had a gastroscope which didn’t find anything helpful, so I was just given a GERD diagnosis, and told to take Omeprazole, which is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). The drug worked very well at reducing my symptoms, but you are only supposed to take it for two weeks at a time. Of course, this meant that half the time I had to just live with the heartburn. When I asked the doctor about this, he just told me to ignore the instructions and take the antacid all the time. I did some research on my own and found that there are side effects to long-term use of PPI’s, and decided the best thing to do was just quit the antacids cold turkey. Along the way I had noticed that for a week or ten days after I quit taking the PPI, the reflux was incredibly bad. That made sense to me because since the PPI was interfering with the normal production of stomach acid, my stomach was attempting to make up the deficit. So when I stopped taking the antacid I suddenly had too much acid, which aggravated the reflux. I thought of this as a rebound effect.

Once I decided to drop the PPI, and got past the period of “rebound”, I decided the answer was going to have to be the natural solution, which was to modify my diet. I kept track of what I had eaten prior to reflux attacks and eliminated those foods. In the end it turned out that greasy, high fat food was the major culprit. If I just stayed away from fat, I usually was fine. Occasionally if I have a carbonated drink on an empty stomach, that will also give me heartburn. I haven’t really had any problem with reflux since I changed my diet. So the short answer to the question is, keep track of your diet and try to stop eating things that cause you problems. It certainly works for me.

It makes me mad that: 1) no doctor ever mentioned to me that PPIs had serious side effects, 2) no doctor mentioned the terrible PPI rebound effect, 3) no doctor suggested just avoiding certain foods. They mentioned diet, but still had me on the PPI. It was a classic example of modern medical care – all the doctor does is determine which drug will fix you up,and write you a prescription. I can understand this because it works ok for most every patient. But it ends up with everyone building up a pill regimen of 4 or 5 or 10 daily pills by the time you get to your 60’s. And the number of pills never seems to decrease. I was lucky that I found one solution that was very satisfactory, and eliminated one of my pills (which was actually doing as much harm as good). It would be much better to try simple things like exercising and having a better diet than adding yet another drug. But I’m sure doctors tell people this all the time and get ignored, so they just write prescriptions, and I understand. It’s a hard problem to overcome, given human nature.

How can you stop acid reflux?
I cannot say that I got rid of acid reflux but I managed to do it. Acid reflux effected the quality of my lifestyle as it makes my esophagus spinster weak which results in hoarsy voice making breathless and sometimes wheezing.

Usually for me,acid reflux gets triggered whenever I had fatty foods such as red meat, peanuts , high fat milk, etc. Dairy products should altogether be avoided.

I started reducing the above foods for a while so then I started noticing that my health is getting better.

One thing which I observed is whenever I had my meal, acid reflux triggers and bloating stomach makes me breathless.it becomes better when I go for brisk walking right away after the meal. At least a ten minute walk makes your stomach feel less bloated.

Then, citrus fruits to be avoided. They also trigger acid reflux. Anything which is acidic makes symptoms worse. And to not forget, sweets are the enemy for acid reflux. Sugar in the body spikes insulin which results in acid reflux.

Eat smaller meals. And do not drink water as soon as you have food. Have water after 30 minutes. A simple 30 minutes walk will help you to manage acid reflux.

Avoid fried foods and coffee. Coffee causes jittery feeling in the evening.

In the night,do not eat anything fatty.eat a small portion of simple food like kitchdi or anything which has less oil and masala.

I used to feel hungry in the evenings. Then I used to have food little early so that I don’t feel bloated before hitting the bed.

In order to control my acid reflux, I used to take digene and gaviscon. Also I have tried ,kayamchur and ajwain seeds. I tried every natural method to get rid of acid reflux.

Upon studying my body, I came to a conclusion that even if your bowel is full, acid reflux occurs.

These all things worked for me. Hope it works for you too.

Remember it’s about walking walking walking ….. and food habits.

How can you stop acid reflux?
That burning sensation in your chest after a meal? It’s not just annoying—it’s acid reflux, and if left unchecked, it can lead to bigger digestive issues.

I once had a patient who swore by antacids but still suffered from reflux every night. When we looked deeper, the problem wasn’t just stomach acid—it was eating late, stress, and poor gut health. By adjusting meal timing, managing stress, and incorporating natural remedies, they finally found relief.

What You Can Do:

Eat smaller meals – Large meals stretch the stomach, making reflux worse.
Don’t lie down right after eating – Wait at least 2-3 hours before bed.
Limit trigger foods – Spicy, fried, and acidic foods can aggravate symptoms.
Drink guava leaf tea – Boil fresh guava leaves for 15-20 minutes and drink twice daily. Chewing five leaves can also bring quick relief.
Maintain a healthy weight – Extra weight can put pressure on your stomach.
First Aid for Acid Reflux:

Sip warm water with a pinch of baking soda to neutralize acid.
Chew sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva, which helps clear acid.
Practice deep breathing to relax the diaphragm and reduce reflux episodes.
Relief is possible with the right lifestyle changes—nature and science can work together for lasting results.

Can acid reflux go away on its own? If yes, how long?
I had acid reflux issues when I was 50 years old, I am now 65. My doctor put me on a drug called asiphex (spelling might be wrong) . I also changed my eating habits no more eating until im stuffed no more eating then laying down. I allow at least 3 hours after eating before going to bed. And I no longer over eat. those two things are the main cause of acid reflux. I now no longer have issues with it but it can still rear its ugly head if I am not careful. I had an endoscopy then went on asiphex for one year and had another endoscopy which showed the damage had healed. But it was not just the drug it requires a lifestyle change. Hope this helps.

Strong odours of faeces and gas is likely due to your diet.

You need to reduce your meat intake. And avoid alcohol and fizzy drinks.

Try it for a month and see how different things are.

What are some acid reflux treatments?
Ok ..so this is my personal experience

I was suffering from acid reflux for 3 months and I tried eating food with no masala …then with no oil …but still the acidity persisted

Then I tried eating every 2 hrs. …then eating only 3 times a day with no snacking …still the acidity persisted

Then I started having some medications like ENO or Pentocid 40 …but the acidity would still come back after few hrs.

Then I stopped having dairy completely because it was giving me weird tummy issues like cramps and bloating …. Though all these issues subsided within few days of leaving dairy but the acidity persisted !

Then I started doing pranayam in the morning which helped to certain limit

But I hit a jackpot when I replaced my wheat chapati with *RAGI* (Naachni/ finger millet ) roti .

Since last 15 days I am completely acidity free

Ragi is one of the few grains which are alkaline for our body

And yoga also helps a lot as while doing pranayam I can feel my salivation increasing and the importance of salivation for our tummy and brain is immense … thats another vast topic to cover !

If u are really interested you can try this in reverse chronology

1st. Replace wheat with ragi

2nd. Do pranayam specially deep breathing

3rd. Avoid Dairy (I don’t know why people say curd helps with acidity …. definitely not this chemically treated one that we get nowadays ! )

How can you stop acid reflux?

Cause

Contrary to the popular belief, GERD is not caused by excess acid production in the stomach. Rather the fact of the matter is that, this condition is caused by low acid secretion in the stomach.

While eating something, when we swallow food, it passes down from the mouth to the pharynx then to the esophagus and finally to the stomach. The environment in the stomach is acidic (pH 1 – 3) and the structure of the stomach is designed to withstand the acid. Special cells in the stomach known as parietal cells secrete acid which is very important for the proper digestion of our food and release of important micronutrient from the food that are supposed to be absorbed in the small intestine.

In order to prevent the regurgitation of the strong acid content from the stomach to the esophagus, a valve, known as gastro – esophageal sphincter is present in the junction of the stomach and the esophagus. Sufficient amount of acid must be present in the stomach in order to maintain the tone of this sphincter and to keep it closed. If for some reason the acidity of the stomach goes down the tone of this sphincter gets lax and as a result, it tends to open up. As the valve opens up the acidic content of the stomach regurgitates back into the esophagus. As esophagus is not designed to withstand such acid, its mucosa that is the inner lining of the esophagus gets irritated and results into the symptoms of GERD.

Mistakes

Now what do we do for relief? We just grab an antacid and pop it in. This, as you can imagine now, does not solve the problem, rather it worsens it. Antacids typically reduce the acid production in the stomach and thus aids in the opening of the gastro – esophageal sphincter even further. The even more dangerous thing is that the newer and more popular antacids, that comes under the generic name Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI) binds irreversibly with the parietal cells (the acid secreting cells in the stomach) and stops them from secreting acid. That essentially means that if once a PPI molecule binds to a parietal cell, the cell gets deactivated forever. This should be enough for the common people to stop consuming these drugs without medical advice from an experienced clinician.

But then how these drugs make us feel better if we take them. Well, that is because as it reduces the acidity of the content in the stomach. Even though it regurgitates into the esophagus, it causes much less irritation as compared to the irritation it caused before taking the drug. This is the reason why the patients suffering from GERD needs to take these drugs regularly.

Does this mean that since the acidity of the content of the stomach is significantly reduced, it does not injure the esophageal mucosa? It of course does. That is what contributes to the higher risk of esophageal cancer in GERD patients.

Solution

1. Chew your food properly before swallowing. Our saliva contains various digestive enzymes and the act of chewing starts the digestive process in the mouth itself and reduces the burden on the stomach.

2. Start taking small meals so that acid present in the stomach suffices.

3. Avoid taking junks containing simple carbohydrates, fried, spicy and processed food and food and beverages containing sugar.

4. Avoid excessive caffeine intake

5. Go for homemade, simple, easily digestible and wholesome food.

6. Avoid eating raw veggies or salads as these may be hard to digest with fewer amount of acid. So cook or steam your veggies.

7. Avoid sleeping immediately after taking food. There should be ideally 2.5 – 3 hours gap between eating food and sleeping. That is early diner is highly recommended.

8. Whenever the symptoms of GERD appear, take a spoonful of Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with a glass of water. Apple cider vinegar helps restoring the acid balance in the stomach and thus helps maintaining the tone of the gastro – esophageal which is essential to keep it closed. But make sure that the apple cider vinegar you are using is organic, raw, unfiltered and comes with the mother. It gives instant relief from such symptoms.

However currently there are no scientific studies to prove this fact but on the basis of my personal and clinical experiences I strongly recommend the use of this natural wonder.

What are some ways to treat silent acid reflux?

Silent acid reflux, also known as laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), occurs when stomach acid travels up into the throat, voice box, or nasal passages without causing typical symptoms like heartburn. Here are some ways to treat and manage it:

1. Lifestyle Changes

Dietary Adjustments: Avoid trigger foods (spicy, fatty, or fried foods, citrus fruits, tomatoes, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated beverages). Eat smaller meals, Overeating can increase stomach pressure and worsen reflux. Avoid eating close to bedtime: Allow 2–3 hours after meals before lying down.
Weight Management: If overweight, losing weight can reduce abdominal pressure and symptoms.
Elevate the Head of Your Bed: Use a wedge pillow or elevate the bed by 6–8 inches to prevent acid from flowing upward while sleeping.
Quit Smoking: Smoking weakens the lower esophageal sphincter and increases reflux risk.
Hydration: Drink plenty of water to dilute stomach acid.
2. Medications

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) to reduce stomach acid production.
H2 Receptor Blockers for milder cases.
Antacids for immediate symptom relief (e.g., calcium carbonate-based antacids).
Prokinetics to improve stomach emptying
3. Behavioral Changes

Avoid lying down or bending over immediately after eating.
Wear loose-fitting clothing to reduce pressure on the abdomen.
Practice stress management techniques like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises, as stress can exacerbate reflux.
4. Voice and Throat Care

Stay hydrated to soothe the throat.
Avoid excessive throat clearing, whispering, or yelling, which can strain the voice box.
5. Medical Procedures (If Needed)

If symptoms persist despite treatment, a gastroenterologist may recommend procedures like:
pH monitoring: To confirm LPR diagnosis.
Endoscopy: To check for damage or other conditions.
Fundoplication: Surgery to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter.
6. Alternative Remedies

Manuka Honey: Known for its soothing and antibacterial properties.
Aloe Vera Juice: May help reduce inflammation in the esophagus.
Chewing Gum: Increases saliva production, which can neutralize acid.
If you suspect LPR or experience persistent symptoms like hoarseness, chronic cough, or throat discomfort, consult a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and tailored treatment.

I hope this answers your question! Please share your thoughts on this in the comments.

Been suffering from acid reflux, heartburn, bloating, etc. for years and feels relieved after taking digestive enzymes. Do I need to take digestive enzymes forever for the rest of my life? Can we restore the digestive enzyme level back to normal?
So this is not a question that can be answered simply, and I do not have time to answer it fully so I am just going to give you some points to investigate further for yourself.

It sounds to me that you may lack suffecient HCL production in your stomach. I would ask why this might be so.
Has anyone tested your B vitamins? You need to be aware that when your Dr says “I will test your B vitamins those tests rarely actually test all of the B vitamins, just three key ones. You will probably have to ask for a B1 Thiamine specifically. The symptoms of a lack of B1 Thianine include fatigue, irritability, poor memory, loss of appetite, sleep disturbances, abdominal discomfort, bloating and weight loss. The test takes about 21 days to run properly and unfortaunately even if it comes back as “normal” it may not tell the whole story. The can only measure the amount in the blood stream, not how well the body is employing it. You could take a supplement called Benfotiamine. It is a lab-made version of vitamin B1, if your symptoms ease then that might actually be a better diagnostic tool for you.
The standard vitamin B tests does cover B9 Folate. Folate also helps with tissue growth and cell function. In addition, it helps to increase appetite when needed and stimulates the formation of digestive acids ( see point 1 – HCL production). You can supplement B9 Folate for yourself but please do not use Folic Acid, it is very poorly absorbed by the body. Use Methylfolate instead, just be aware to start low and GENTLY work up the dose as it can make some people a bit sick tostart with. If this does happen just make sure to take some electrolyte powders before taking the Methylfolate, this will reduce the chance of sickness.
If you are taking anything for the heartburn/reflux then STOP. Those products interefere with B vitamin uptake and metabolisation.
If you continuosly take digestive enzymes you will suppress your body’s ability to make them on its own, so get onto the B Vitamin issues ASAP.
Believe it or not this is the short answer to your question. When it comes to human digestion and nutrition the Devil really is in the detail. Sorting out what might be wrong is problematic because most Drs knowledge in this is dreadfully poor.

Regards, Judith.

How do I know what’s causing my acid reflux?
i had acid reflux, heartburn, and was sick ALL the time. i told my dad all the time. it was after every meal. every snack. every time i ate i felt like i was being punished. i lived with tums. finally i got a doctors appointment. my doctor tested me for everything. i was put on diets, had blood taken many times, and was finally put on prilosec. none of it did absolutely anything. i started to have pain that based in the upper right of my abdomen and stretched in a band like feeling all the way to my back. it was painful. i couldn’t move and it hurt to breathe. these became more and more common. i was admitted into the emergency room multiple times because of all of this. i had ultra sounds, CT scans, blood drawn, everything. they could not figure out what was wrong with me. at the time, my boyfriend had recently had his gallbladder removed. he was having similar symptoms to me and when he finally figured it out, he immediately had it removed. i told the ER doctor that and was referred to a general surgeon. she said it already sounded like gallbladder issues when i explained it to her, but to be safe, she ordered a HIDA scan ( hepatobiliary iminodiecetic acid scan) it looks at your liver, gallbladder, biliary tract, and small intestine. when she saw how fast my gallbladder was pumping stomach bile, she zoomed in and saw that it was enlarged as well. it was overworked AND getting bigger. she scheduled my surgery that friday. and i had it removed through laparoscopy. i still carry tums with me though(:

How do I make acid reflux go away fast?
I often have acid reflux at night which will wake me up out of a sound sleep. I’m 88 yrs. old and I’ve been using this method since I was 12. I dissolve a very heaping teaspoon of baking SODA – not powder – in 8 oz. of water and place the glass by my bedside. If I’m awakened by the acid, I drink about 4 oz. of the solution and keep the rest for use the next night if needed. My discomfort is usually gone in about 15 to 20 seconds followed by a big burp.

How did you cure your acidity, Gerd, acid reflux problem and food pipe related problem?
To simply cure your hyperacidity long term, you must identify the root cause of your acidity.

In my experience there are four different causes for acidity.

Each cause has its own solution.

‘Excess Weight’

How is belly size linked to acidity?

Research shows that excess abdomen fat can physically push your stomach upwards.

This may cause an imbalance in stomach acid production.

(solution-weight management)

Hyperacidity due to ‘Low’ Stomach Acid

Research says that low stomach acid (not high stomach acid) causes acid reflux.

If your did not burp, your cause for acidity is low stomach acid.

(solution-eat bitter food/drinks as it restores acid production in your stomach)

‘stress / poor sleep’

Stress is a common trigger for acid reflux.

When you’re stressed your stomach muscles tighten.

Tightening of your abdominal muscles pushes acid upwards, making your lower esophageal sphincter (gate to your stomach) weak.

(solution-stress management)

Sleep

Sometimes, acidity is caused by something as simple as posture.

If you are lying down, for example, it is easier for your stomach acid to travel to your food pipe.

This can cause an acid reflux.

(solution-avoid acidic food during the night, avoid late night eating, change sleep posture)

‘Allergy’ or ‘Medicine’

Health medications and food allergies often trigger our stomach lining.

Pills like antibiotics, high BP meds, iron supplements and anti-anxiety drugs are common medication categories that you should look out for.

(solution-dump the allergen or medicine that causes a reaction)

Once you identify the cause, you will know how to counter the cause effectively.

For further queries, comment down below and I will provide you with a detailed guide for the same.

What’s the best treatment for acid reflux?
Hello,

Although I’m not a doctor, I suffer from acid reflux for over 10 years, so here’s some advice.

Healthy eating-if you eat healthy, avoid greasy foods, anything fried or processed foods, you will have greatly improved your reflux. You don’t need to diet, but make sure you create a healthy lifestyle; avoid the things that bother you.

Is there any permanent cure for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also known as acid reflux? What are the causes, symptoms & treatments for GERD? Can you suggest some home remedies as well?
GERD happens when stomach acid flows up into the esophagus due to a weak valve. Heartburn, acid regurgitation, sore throat, chest pain, and difficulty swallowing are the common symptoms of GERD. Other risk factors are being overweight, overeating, certain foods, smoking, pregnancy, and so on.

Treatment Options:

Surgery: Some procedures like Nissen fundoplication (The surgeon will wrap the top of the stomach around the lower esophagus, and may also stitch the diaphragm to make the opening for the esophagus smaller) ensure lasting relief by strengthening the valve.
Lifestyle Changes: Smaller meals,

What are the best ways to manage acid reflux, and what can the condition potentially lead to?
Thank you for the A2A.

There are many ways to manage acid reflux (GERD):

1..Be careful of what you eat … some foods that are more likely to trigger GERD are mint, fatty foods, spicy foods, tomatoes, onions, garlic, chocolate, citrus fruit and juice, drinks with caffeine (ie coffee and tea), and alcohol.

If you don’t know which food is causing symptoms, you can eliminate one at a time to see if it affects you or not.

2..Avoid carbonated drinks. When you burp, the acid goes back up into the esophagus.

3..Sleep on an incline. There are foam wedge supports you can get (Amazon has some), or put somethin… (more)

What are the symptoms of an inflamed or damaged stomach from acid reflux? How can it be treated and healed?
Hydration plays an important role in maintaining our health, Alkaline water has been a subject of interest in recent years, with proponents claiming various health benefits. Advocates suggest that alkaline water, with a higher pH level than regular tap water, can neutralize acidity in the body and potentially prevent certain health issues. Some studies have suggested that alkaline water may help improve hydration, slow ageing, and even aid in weight loss by balancing the body’s pH levels.

The unique properties of alkaline water are found to swiftly deactivate pepsin, a key enzyme linked to acid… (more)

What are the best ways to manage acid reflux, and what can the condition potentially lead to?
To manage acid reflux you can do the following

Avoid eating within three hours before retiring for the night.
Avoid foods that you know will give you heartburn or cause you to have abdominal gas. Abdominal gas increases pressure in the stomach and may help move stomach contents into the esophagus.
Avoid carbonated beverages; the gas in them has the same effect as abdominal gas mentioned in 2. above.
Sleep on your left side. This positions the stomach and esophagus to minimize reflux.
Put 4″-6″ blocks under the legs at the head of your bed; this creates an incline so that gravity will help keep stom

What are the possible causes of sudden severe acid reflux and how can it be treated at home? Is it a sign of a serious health issue?
Sudden severe acid reflux can be caused by factors such as dietary indiscretion, stress, obesity, pregnancy, or medications that relax the lower esophageal sphincter. It can also indicate an underlying condition like a hiatal hernia or GERD. At home, treatment includes avoiding trigger foods, eating smaller meals, not lying down after eating, elevating the head of your bed, and using over-the-counter antacids or H2 blockers. If symptoms persist or worsen, it’s important to seek medical advice as it could indicate a more serious health issue. For more information on treating acid reflux, you can explore my Quora Profile.

What are the causes for acid reflux and what can you do to relieve the symptoms?
Listed below are some of the causes of acid reflux and what you could do to relieve the symptoms

Acid reflux disease is a product of the failure of the esophageal sphincter to function. Because of abnormal acid production, digestive processes are affected.

And causes burning sensations in the stomach, chest, and even up to the esophagus. Too low acid production causes the valve in the stomach not to open.

So the tendency of the stomach acids is to rise up and inflame the esophagus. So, too much acid production follows the same case.

There are many factors that can be deemed responsible for acid re… (more)

Why does reflux cause so much havoc?
Imo, but i am not an expert, just a patient who read tons of med articles on it, it is because ( not imo, according to what i read, sorry, English is not my first language) medical science is behind this problem. Many fields should allign in this illness, but they dont. Respiratory, ENT, gastroenterology and maybe i forgot some. For instance in my case it is a 24/7 sensation of not getting enough air in. ( mine is LPR though, not GERD) so it is pretty brutal and frustrating and affect my quality of life big time. Others complain about lump in throat as also a sensation that never goes away. What foods help acid reflux go away?
1. Bananas. This low-acid fruit can help those with acid reflux by coating an irritated esophageal lining and thereby helping to combat discomfort. Due to their high-fiber content, bananas also can help strengthen your digestive system — which can help ward off indigestion. One soluble fiber found in bananas is pectin, which helps move stomach contents through your digestive tract. And that’s a good thing — because food that sticks around will only continue to generate acid.

2. Melons. Like bananas, melons also are a highly alkaline fruit. They are a good source of magnesium, which is found in … (more)

What are the causes for acid reflux and what can you do to relieve the symptoms?
The most common cause is food that’s acidic or high in fat—like citrus fruits, tomatoes, onions, chocolate, coffee, cheese, and peppermint. Spicy foods or large meals can also be the root of distress. Other sources of heartburn include aspirin or ibuprofen, as well as some sedatives and blood pressure medications. Lung and throat problems — If stomach acid backs up into the throat, this can cause inflammation of the vocal cords, a sore throat, or a hoarse voice. The acid can also be inhaled into the lungs and cause pneumonia or asthma symptoms. Over time, acid in the lungs can lead to permanen… (more)
